The details on this page provide information about 'nGen.1',
a South East Arts funded project. We welcome responses which can be
mailed to: contact@atgj.org
nGen.1 grew from an interest in taking interactive, combined arts
and performance into new and challenging environments. The first performance
took place in an underpass in Brighton as part of the Brighton &
Hove Arts Festival 2002. The second installation of nGen.1 was at SameSky,
KempTown and included live performance.
nGen.1 used ultrasound sensors (as part of the I-Cube
System) to detect pedestrians as they passed through a public space.
Each movement was mapped to a sixteen-zoned virtual space in which the
audience altered the visual and musical dynamics of the piece. As artists
working with new technology, it is our aim to unite
art and technology in a seamless and innovative way, enabling the audience
to reveal the meaning of our work as they interact with it over time.
The Visual Themes
My aim was to achieve an encompassing, immersive experience through
the use of projected images that represented a continuum of matter and
time conveyed through the process of drawing and animation. As the audience
interacted, the work appears as a constantly evolving form, representing
a generative and continual energy in which they play a vital part.
The ideas were partly based on current research into modes of information
processing in the human brain. Although I do not fully understand these
mechanisms, it is the isotropic nature of this connectivity that holds
a fascination for me, both in terms of how to represent, visually, the
potential of these ideas whilst also considering them in relation to
human memory and communication.
The Musical Themes
The music was interactive, and was composed in collaboration with a
computer program called OriGen written by Andrew. The way this was used
in nGen.1 is detailed on Andrew's site here,
which also contains a link to some of the sound clips.
